What to Do With Used Office Equipment

Most businesses try to keep up with advanced technology by updating their office equipment every number of years.

They usually buy new computers, a more modern photocopier or perhaps the latest id scanner.  In some instances, they have to change everything out as the equipment becomes obsolete.  In the olden days, typewriters were replaced by word-processors and these by computers.  And as you’re probably aware, the latest gadgets out today become outdated in a very short period of time.

Perhaps it’s time you look around your office and see what’s ready for the dumpster.  You’ll certainly want to get rid of the rolodex and buy yourself the best id scanner in the market.  However, note that you don’t have to throw away your used office equipment.  You may take some of the apparatus home and have them for personal use.  Keep in mind that if you do, you can’t continue to take the depreciation deduction on your income tax return.  So if you take the old id scanner home, you can’t deduct its devaluation on your taxes.  But this is a subject you’ll need to discuss with your accountant.

There’s also another option.  Perhaps you’re not aware of the fact that there are companies that specialize in purchasing used office equipment.  This is something you may want to consider.  At least this way you’ll get a percentage of the value of the equipment, to pay for the newer items.

Many businesses that have failed due to the economy go this route in order to recover some of their losses.  Among the companies that purchase used equipment are the recyclers.  They buy your things at a low cost in order to sell them as scrap or in some cases, for resale.  So if that id scanner is in good shape, they’ll resell it.

Second-hand stores may also be interested in buying your used office items.  Of course, they pay well if the equipment is in working order.  So if the id scanner we’ve talked about is not really working well, give it to the recyclers.

And lastly, consider selling everything to another business.  It’s likely you’ll find a new enterprise that’s looking to save money by purchasing a used id scanner or an older model computer.  Therefore, don’t throw away your equipment.
